Medulin

A life facing the open sea

In the very south of the Istrian peninsula, Medulin has lived in harmony with the sea for centuries. Once a fishing village, it is now one of Istria’s liveliest holiday resorts, but its authentic spirit can still be felt beneath the seasonal buzz. The boats in the harbour, the stone houses, the scent of fresh fish and the bell towers of St. Agnes, visible from afar.

The coastline here is anything but uniform. Sandy beaches vie in beauty with the rocky bays, while the string of islands and headlands leads out to the open sea. Warmer days are spent on the sand at Bijeca Beach, or on a board, bicycle or boat heading towards Premantura and Kamenjak.

And then there is Vižula. A green peninsula right by the town, where the remains of an ancient villa lie between the pines and the sea. A good reminder that Medulin is not just a holiday resort, but a place where people have long known the value of living by the sea.

Istria

A magical land of stories and landscapes.

On one side, olive groves, vineyards and stone towns carved by a masterful hand; on theother, cliffs, wind and the open sea, which create almost dramatic scenes at the very south of the peninsula.

For centuries, the story of Istria was written by the Romans, the Venetians and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, leaving behind amphitheatres, palaces and bell towers that still define the skyline of towns such as Pula, Rovinj and Poreč. And then there is the cuisine, which places Istria at the very pinnacle of Croatian gastronomy.

History

From an ancient villa to the Medulin harbour

Long before hotels and summer terraces, the Romans had already recognised the value of Medulin Bay. On the Vižula peninsula, they built a lavish villa with thermal baths, mosaics and its own harbour, which still testifies to how highly this bay was valued.

Over time, the splendour of the ancient residence faded, and Medulin turned to a simpler way of life. Generations of local people lived off fishing, agriculture and the sea, building the town around the harbour, stone houses and the Church of St. Agnes.

Gastronomy

Tastes of Southern Istria

Two glasses of white wine with bruschetta and fruit on a table
Black pasta with clams in a deep plate
Fresh olives in a wicker basket beside a bottle of olive oil

In Medulin, cooking is simple, using ingredients from the sea and the Istrian soil. The table features grilled sardines, black risotto, a traditional fish stew known as brodet, spider crab and homemade pasta, paired with local olive oil and regional wines.

What makes this cuisine so appealing isn't complexity, but freshness and clean, vivid flavours. It is best enjoyed in traditional taverns, on seaside terraces and with a laid-back lifestyle where nobody rushes.

When heritage takes to the streets

There is a reason why we return to the old symbols of a place. In Medulin, that means the old Malin on the waterfront, the hackberry tree on the Placa, and the archaeological traces of Vižula. They are not just landmarks, but the centres around which local life has gathered for decades.

Malin, whose story began in 1872, grinds grain once again and shows summer visitors how bread was once baked, while the 115-year-old hackberry in the main square still casts shade where generations of Medulin locals met and made important decisions.

Beaches

A coastline rich in character

The Medulin coastline changes its character every few kilometres. In the town itself, you will find Bijeca, a kilometre-long sandy beach with a gentle slope into the sea, andbeyond it you’ll find a succession of well-kept pebble beaches, rocky coves and pine trees offering shade right by the shore.

The greatest contrast, however, is reserved for Kamenjak, a landscape of rugged rocks and hidden coves facing the open sea. This protected headland stretches along around 30 kilometres of indented coastline, and its beaches attract swimmers, divers, kayakers and surfers.

When to visit Medulin

Medulin is at its liveliest from June to September, when the days are long, the sea is warm, and almost all of the town’s life shifts towards the beaches and the waterfront.

In July and August, average daily temperatures reach around 27°C, while sea temperatures average 24–25°C. Spring and early autumn are pleasant for cycling, walks around Kamenjak and day trips, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 16 to 23°C. In winter, averages drop to around 9–14°C, revealing a quieter side of Medulin where you can have the coast almost entirely to yourself.

Events

A summer to hear, taste and see

In Medulin, events follow the rhythm of life, taking place on the waterfront, by Malin, in the quarry, on the beaches and under the open sky.

Especially striking are the music events in the Roman quarry Cave Romane, where monumental stone walls become one of Istria’s most unusual concert backdrops. In Medulin, rockabilly meets classic cars, while fishermen’s evenings pair up with traditional klapa singing and fresh sardines.
