Crikvenica

The Kvarner region, a sliver of soil between the Adriatic Sea and the Dinaric Alps, hides many treasures of natural beauty and cultural richness. From historic coastal towns to green islands, Kvarner captivates visitors with its diversity.

The first traces of life in Crikvenica date back to around 2000 BC. In the 1st century, a station on a Roman road stood here, Ad Turres, with a pottery workshop. The history of Crikvenica, Dramalj, Jadranovo and Selce is tied to the development of the neighbouring medieval towns of Drivenik, Grižane, Bribir and Tribalj and the fertile Vinodol valley. Each of these towns had a harbour around which fishing villages grew, and skilled fishermen and stonemasons shaped both the quality of life and the look of the towns in Vinodol. Today's Crikvenica was formed when people moved out of these overcrowded towns nearby. With too little land to farm, the people of Crikvenica turned to the sea; legend has it that the old Crikvenica locals were born on fishing nets. In the 19th century, Crikvenica was a centre of oily fish fishing, above all sardines, and in the second half of the century it developed into a climatic health resort, a favourite of the Austro-Hungarian nobility.

Crikvenica combines deep history roots with a lively modern vibe. Visitors can enjoy traditional festivals, baroque music, and art exhibitions that celebrate the town’s heritage.

Crikvenica is one of the few destinations on the Croatian coast with sandy beaches. Sand and fine pebbles, shallow water and well-kept bathing areas along the promenade make it an excellent choice for families and water sports enthusiasts.

Crikvenica enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild winters. The summer months, from June to September, are perfect for beach activities, with average highs around 30°C. In July and August the sea is usually 24 to 26°C, while June and September bring pleasantly warm water and quieter beaches. Spring and autumn are ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing, with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.

The winter season provides a peaceful atmosphere, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 8°C to 15°C.

Crikvenica celebrates all year round: from the international carnival in winter and Fishermen's Week to summer music evenings, CrikvArt, the street performers' festival, and Advent by the sea.
