Culture that lives on the square, in song and in the vineyards

Culture in Novi Vinodolski is not confined to museums. It lives in the circle dance that turns in front of the castle every winter, in klapa singing in the old town and in the vineyards of Vinodol, where a Ružica is chosen every August. When you want a break from the beach, here are five places and customs that make Novi special.

The living heritage of Novi Vinodolski

Museum and gallery in the Frankopan Castle

The Town Museum in the castle and Turnac Tower holds archaeological and underwater finds, Novi folk costumes and traditional instruments, and items that belonged to the Mažuranić family, including the saber of Ban Ivan Mažuranić. The gallery shows works by Croatian painters, among them Menci Clement Crnčić and Oton Iveković.

Klapa and traditional music

Klapa singing echoes through the old town during Ružica Vinodola and on summer evenings, and in summer the Church of St. Philip and St. James becomes the venue of the International Classical Music Festival.

Novi Carnival (Novljanski mesopust)

A centuries-old carnival custom, listed as intangible cultural heritage of the Republic of Croatia since 2011. Mesopustari in traditional costumes, the circle dance on the square in front of the castle and the trial of Mesopust bring the whole town together in the days before Lent.

Nebeski labirinti (Sky Labyrinths)

At around 800 meters above sea level, in Krmpote above Klenovica, Ingrid Karačić Butorac laid out stone labyrinths from 1,258 stones in 2012. Nine labyrinths are linked to the planets, and the tenth is dedicated to Ganesha. They are at their best in spring and early autumn.
