Karlovac

The Karlovac region presents an ideal blend of urban and rural experiences, which you can easily combine into a single trip. Karlovac was officially founded on 13 July 1579 as a defensive town, which is precisely why its historic core was designed in the shape of a star. Older than the town itself, the Dubovac fortress was repeatedly attacked by the Ottomans but never conquered. The old town grid was once surrounded by moats, which have since been transformed into beautiful 3D parks and playgrounds.

The town’s first public library was founded in 1838, and just 16 years later the first brewery was established – marking the beginning of a proud brewing tradition. The great Nikola Tesla attended the Karlovac Gymnasium (secondary school), where he acquired his first technical knowledge. During the Illyrian movement, the town was also shaped by a remarkable woman – author Dragojla Jarnević.

Modern gastronomy has brought back what our ancestors already knew – seasonal ingredients are the best! In Karlovac, themed menus are prepared year-round—depending on the season—with beer, chestnuts, mushrooms, strawberries, and river fish. When it comes to fish, the menus usually offer pike-perch and trout, fried in beer batter or grilled.

There are many restaurants, bistros, pizzerias, grill houses, and pastry shops throughout the town. But if you want to experience the liveliest culinary hotspot – visit the town market.

In Karlovac, you won’t experience culture only through museum showcases, but through cultural events and festivals, stories told by costumed guides, murals, the century-old Edison cinema, and unusual sculptures you may stumble upon if you wander off the beaten path.

Spring and autumn bring pleasant temperatures of 12–22 °C, perfect for walking, cycling, and exploring the town’s natural and cultural heritage. Winters are moderately cold, with averages from 0–7 °C, often calm and quiet, making Karlovac a great choice for those seeking a slower pace and an authentic town atmosphere without crowds.

Autumn: colourful tree canopies, swans gliding along the Korana, roasted chestnuts, and forest mushrooms.

Winter: fog paints the town in pastel tones, heralding the Advent season, skating, and sledding in the 3D parks.
