History

The history of the island of Hvar dates back to its prehistoric settlements from 3500 BC, while the first written records date back to 385 BC, with the founding of the Greek colony of Pharos in the place of today’s Stari Grad. Under the rule of the Venetian Republic, from 1278 until the end of the 18th century, Hvar experienced a golden age, and in 1612, the first public theatre in Europe was founded on the island.
